The fire in Notre Dame Cathedral

The fire at the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral was extinguished, newspaper Le Figaro reported, citing fire service spokesman Gabriel Plus.

"The fire was extinguished," Plus said.

He added that firefighters will continue to control the fire prevent the fire from unleashing again. Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire on Monday around 7:00 pm local time (17:00 GMT).

Its cause is unknown for now, however the incident occurred at a time when the that important restoration work was carried out in this historical monument that is the most visited in Europe.

The fire destroyed a good part of the roof of the cathedral, the needle and the clock collapsed.
